Bye Bye Summer Acne!

Summer acne is the worst! At least in the winter time we have sweaters, scarves, beanies, etc. to help cover it up and we can wear a lot of product on our skin to hide flaws without make-up melting away.  To keep summer acne at bay make sure you use less product on your face.  Using as much make-up as you do in the winter is a big no-no because when you're outside the heat from the sun opens your pores and your make-up will clog your pores causing blackheads and acne.

Another thing you can do to prevent acne on your face is washing your sunglasses/eyeglasses and cell phone frequently.  I wear my sunglasses everyday in the summer to protect my eyes and prevent those "11 lines" on the top of my nose between my eyes.  My sunglasses at the end of the day usually have some make-up on the inside of them and I make sure to take care of that and the oil and dirt on my phone with rubbing alcohol or hand wipes.  If you notice that you are getting acne where your sunglasses usually are or on the side of your face where you use your cellphone, chances are you will see a huge difference when you start cleaning these things.

One last tip: hands off your face! The only time you should touch your face is when your hands are clean and you are applying skin care and make-up.  Other than that don't touch your face because of the bacteria, dirt, and oils from your fingertips.  We are always touching elevator buttons, gasoline pumps, our credit cards, door handles and all these things are crawling with disgusting germs.  Don't transfer germs from your hands to your face.

Good luck being acne free this summer!

Dirt and grease from your phone transfers onto your skin

Sunglasses help prevent wrinkles in the summer but
take care of them so they don't clog your pores

Prevent wrinkles while you sleep

Hi beauty!

Just a quick tip to prevent fine lines and wrinkles while you sleep.  For those of you who sleep face down in your pillow or on your side like I do, we are creating "sleep lines" while we're resting.  Sleep lines are lines we get from smushing our face into our fluffy pillows.  These lines are more noticeable as you age and become permanent.

The best way to sleep if you want to prevent fine lines and wrinkles is to sleep on your back.  Bonus tip: sleeping on your back also keeps your breasts more perky!  If sleeping on your back is uncomfortable, try alternating sides each night.

For an example check out Disney Princess Aurora down below.  She is in the perfect sleep position to prevent wrinkles and sleeping with a tiara? That's my kind of girl!

Sleep well pretty!

Bananas make you beautiful

Hello there gorgeous!

Bananas are filled with vitamins, potassium, and antioxidants and are not only good to put in your body but on your body too.  They are an easy snack when you're on the go, usually my go to ingredient when making a smoothie, and great to add to at home face or hair masks.

When you eat a banana
  • you are giving yourself natural energy
  • getting in a better mood and lifting your spirits
  • boosting brainpower
It is best to eat a banana in the morning, before taking a test, and if you are feeling sad. For all you women out there make sure you stock up on these babies once a month.  You know, during that time of the month.. It helps with cramps.

After you're done with the banana don't just throw it away! Use the banana peel.

I know I know, this sounds so weird and random but using a banana peel actually works wonders for you skin and teeth.  A banana peel makes your teeth whiter, helps treat acne, acne scars, bug bites, psoriasis, warts, and poison ivy.

Since last weekend I have been using a banana peel on my teeth and skin at night before I start my normal beauty routine and let me tell you my face has cleared up and has a pretty glow to it.  As for my teeth, they aren't white as snow just yet but I can tell they are a bit whiter.  Not only has a banana peel improved my face and smile but I also got a mosquito bite the other day and rubbing a banana peel on it for a few minutes made the itching feeling go away!  Camping and hiking problems are now solved forever.

What you do is cut a piece of a banana peel and rub on your skin where you have acne scars, bug bites, etc.  Do this until the inside of the banana goes from that white/yellow color to a deeper yellow/light brown color.  Let it sit for a minute or two (longer for poison ivy) and then wash off with warm water after. Ta-da! You have skin that feels soft again.  For your teeth just take a piece of the banana peel and rub it in for 30 seconds and rinse with water.

Tell me what you think and if you have any other banana beauty secrets for me.

As always, stay fabulous you beautiful thing you!

Get your Miss America Smile On!

Hello beauties!

I have always loved watching beauty pageants because of the big hair, make-up, and gorgeous outfits.  It is so fun rooting for your state or favorite girl.  For those of you who didn't catch the beauty pageant on T.V., Miss Connecticut won the 2013 Miss America pageant and she looked awesome!

http://www.missuniverse.com/

There is something I have noticed in all my years of watching beauty pageants and that is that each contestant I have ever seen has bright, pearly white teeth.  I am a huge fan of white teeth and healthy gums.  My teeth are very important to me and I make sure I brush with my sonicare and floss daily.  Going to the dentist for a teeth cleaning is like going to a day at the spa.  Ahhh... so relaxing and so refreshing!

When it comes to teeth I know my stuff!  I always have questions galore for my dentist who I see on a regular basis and teeth whitening has been a subject we have been talking about for a while.  I used to whiten my teeth with all different types of  whitening strips and whitening mouthwashes and they worked but my teeth could not take the sensitivity!  That is the main reason he postponed my appointment for my professional teeth whitening appointment.  He told me that having bright and white teeth was attainable to a certain extent but he also said all of the whitening products out their make your teeth very sensitive.  I just did not like that answer so I have been on the search for products and natural or at home things that make your teeth white without the sensitive feeling.

If you want store bought whitening products I would choose REMBRANDT.  I use REMBRANDT toothpaste, mouth wash, and whitening strips almost every day.  With these products I have zero sensitive feeling and I love them because they are safe for your enamel, not as expensive as other whitening products, and have the key ingredient fluoride in them.  My dentist always tells me to look for toothpaste and mouth wash with fluoride because it prevents tooth decay and strengthens your enamel.  To get coupons on REMBRANDT products click here for rembrandt offers.

For an all natural teeth whitening fix I have a very delicious suggestion.   The tip to whiter teeth without the sensitivity is strawberries!  All you do is bite the tip off of a strawberry, which are currently in season, and rub the inside of the strawberry all of your teeth in a circular motion.  Keep it on for 3-5 minutes before rinsing out with water.  I ran this one by my dentist and he knows it works but he just says to limit the amount of times per month that I do these teeth whitening treatments and to always brush regularly after.  The malic acid in the strawberry is what gets the teeth white but you need to remember to brush after because of the sugar from the strawberry.  Go ahead an keep on eating the strawberries if you would like...   I mean that's what I do.

Hope you enjoy getting a brighter and whiter smile without that sensitive feeling!  Don't forget to smile big!

The Ice Cube, Coolest Beauty Trick Ever!

This may sound a bit strange but I love what an ice cube can do for my skin and make-up, but most of all I especially love how much it cools me down in the summer!  I have been using the ice cube trick for years now and let me tell you it really works and it is one of my favorites!  Using an ice cube on my face feels so refreshing and it also helps wake up and kick start my day with a smile!

After you have cleansed and dried your face take an ice cube and wrap it in a paper towel or just put it straight on your face.  Rub it all over your forehead, cheeks, nose, chin or wherever you have the largest pores.  Only do this for about 5-10 seconds.  Then use the dry part of the paper towel to gently pat your face dry.

What the ice does for you is decrease inflammation and the red spots around those pesky zits, it shrinks your pores so you can barely see them under make-up, reduces puffiness under your eyes if you had one hell of a night, and it keeps your make-up from rubbing off.

After you have used the ice cube toss it in the sink and apply your regular skin care and make-up products.  I follow with a toner, SPF moisturizer, and then my foundation.   The ice cube trick is not something I do everyday but if I want my make-up and skin to look flawless all day or night I make sure to use it.

Using an ice cube is perfect before a special event, hot date, a night out with the girls, if you plan on taking pictures at all, and for a girls special day, her wedding. Sigh... You better believe this fabulous girl is using an ice cube the morning of my wedding day!  Well... that's if I ever become a bride!  But that's a whole other subject!

Try it out and tell me what you think of the ice cube trick!

As always, stay good and stay fabulous gorgeous!

Does she look like she's having a fabulous time or what!

Grab a LIME ladies and gents, they're in season and it's Margarita Monday!!

Wow the work day is finally over!  Sometimes it's hard to get through a Monday especially if you had a fantastic weekend.  The great thing you can look forward to at the end of the day though is a nice cold margarita with lime and in this weather it is so refreshing.

Drinking your calories can add up really quick so I try to skip calories where I can.  When I have a night on the town, my go to drink is vodka with lime or a 100% agave tequila with lime.  I ask the bartender to mash up a lime for me and pour in a shot with lots of ice.  Putting extra syrups, soda, juices, etc. in your drink really adds up in calories so I choose to use limes instead.

If you aren't into libations though you can still have a tasty and refreshing drink with lime.  Adding lime to your water or iced green tea is so refreshing  Lime is the only citrus fruit in season right now and apart from giving your foods and drinks that extra kick, there are so many health and beauty benefits this little fruit offers.

Back in the day people used lime, which is full of vitamin C, to help cure for scurvy.   This was  a disease due to lack of vitamin C.  Fast forward to 2013 and this health and beauty guru likes to use it for skin care, digestion, weight loss, and her food and drinks!

During the summer I'll bathe in lime water!  I run a bath for myself, squeeze an entire lime into the water, and enjoy!  The smell is so refreshing and it makes my skin soft, shiny, and smelling oh so clean.  This is because limes are full of antioxidants and vitamin C.  The acid in the lime scrubs away at dead skin cells and can even help guys who have been out in the heat all day get rid of some of their funk!  You know that smell I'm talking about.  Pee-yew!!

My doctor is actually the one who taught me about using lime for digestion and constipation.  He says it "cleans you out".  Kind of a gross subject but it happens and I like to handle it in a natural way not with laxatives.  The acids in the lime will break down your food and stimulate the digestive process so if you ever over eat or just want to kick start your metabolism add a lime to your water or squeeze lime over your dish of choice.

I think that eating with lime is a healthier option than drenching your salads with dressing, your french fries with ketchup or ranch, and filling your drinks with syrups and soda.

Hope all these fun facts helped!  Now that your done reading go to the store, buy some limes, and add it to whatever you want!

Bottoms up!

Bye bye harmful UV rays

With heat rising to all time record highs we need to make sure we are protecting ourselves against harmful ultraviolet rays.  Both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB)  can cause skin cancer.  UVA rays are linked with having deep skin damage effects such as premature aging and ultraviolet B rays cause sunburn.  Ouch!

The US Food and Drug Administration as well as The American Academy of Dermatology have dubbed sunscreen as both safe and effective ways to protect skin against harmful sun rays.

With all the different types of sunscreens out there claiming to help protect you, it may be confusing as to what to get and spend your money on.  I'll let you in on some secrets on how and when to apply, what I look for, and what my personal favorites are!

If you know you will be outside after 10 a.m. make sure you are reapplying at least an ounce of SPF constantly.  I prefer using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.  The Sun Protection Factor allows you to stay in the sun for a longer amount of time without burning.  I have naturally tan skin and it usually takes me about an hour before I start to redden but using an SPF 30 lets me stay in the sun for 30 times as long without burning.  An easy mathematical way to figure out which type you need is taking the number of minutes it takes you to burn without using sunblock and multiplying that number by the SPF.  In my case I would times 60 minutes by a 30 SPF meaning I could stay in the sun for 1800 minutes.

I also look for the words UVA/UVB protection or broad spectrum to make sure my sunscreen is fighting against both ultraviolet rays.  Having my sunscreen be noncomedogenic and dermatologist recommended is important to me so I'm not clogging my pores.  If you know you will be outside exercising or swimming, it would be best to use sunscreens that are water resistant or water proof.

If you are someone who forgets to put on sunscreen make it part of your morning ritual.  I apply sunscreen everyday of the year rain or shine before I put on my foundation.  It is getting increasingly easy to incorporate   sunscreen in your routine because they have foundations and powders that have SPF in them.

During the summer I apply sunscreen everywhere and I make sure it is applied at least 15-20 minutes before I go out in the sun.  Every other day of the year I make sure to apply sunscreen to my face, ears, neck, and hands.  I don't skip out on applying sunscreen to my neck and hands because I want to prevent wrinkles and age spots in these areas for as long as possible.

I have a few go to favorites of all different price ranges that I feel protect me best.  My absolute favorite I use year round is SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 which can be purchased at http://www.skinceuticals.com/.  This product works fabulous and glides on so smoothly with a universal tint.  In all my years testing sunscreen I have not found a product that feels as lightweight as this.  Another bonus with this product is that it is paraben free, chemical-filter free and it's water resistant.  My drug store favorite and something that is a lot easier on your wallet is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Broad Spectrum SPF 55.  I like this sunscreen because when I have make-up on and sweat it doesn't show streaks of white rolling down my face that I have found common in other brands.  Not cute.  During the summer I like to use tinted moisturizer for extra protection and coverage and this summer I have definitely been getting into the BB Cream trend.  My personal favorites that I use are Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm in SPF 20 for a dewy, fresh, and healthy look , Miracle Skin Transformer SPF 20 which glides on smooth, and Shiseido Urban Environment Tinted UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 43 if I'm in a hurry!

There is no reason not to lather up in that sunscreen!  Remember what I told you and do your skin a favor and protect yourself not only from harmful UVA and UVB rays but help prevent fine lines, wrinkles, crows feet, and sun spots.  For more information on your specific skin type take the Fitzpatrick skin quiz on the Skin Cancer Foundation website which measures your genetic disposition and reaction to sun exposure to see where your skin fits in.

Have fun in the sun!

Stretch and Strengthen Your Back While You're Young to Prevent Shrinking as You Age

Have you ever noticed how some elderly people hunch over or hear your parents complain about them shrinking?  I happen to notice and hear that A LOT!  A persons height no matter how tall they stand should be something they are proud of.  We're all made at different sizes but we need to strengthen and stretch our back now so we can keep our height as we get older.

So when do most people start shrinking?  Studies have proven people have started loosing their height as early as their late 30's.  This is so shocking to hear.  The bad thing about shrinking in my opinion isn't only that people are loosing height but they have a higher chance at fracturing a hip as well as making themselves more vulnerable to other health issues.

If you are reading this and are in your 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and so on, it's not too late to do some stretching to improve your strength and posture.

To keep a healthy posture and strong back as you age it is best to incorporate calcium and vitamin D into your diet and stretch by doing yoga poses or pilates.  Our genetic make-up also plays a role in our bone density but you play a part in that as well.  Do what you can now to make it easier on yourself as you age.

Pelvic tilt on Livestrong website

To find more ways to stretch your back, click on the Livestrong link below or the Jillian Michaels 35 minute full body and back strengthening youtube video.

PS. Jillian Michaels may be doing a yoga video but I can almost guarantee you will sweat.  At least I did!

Will you be sporting the CAMO trend this summer

The camouflage trend started popping up in a lot of my favorite stores and boutiques during spring time.  I thought this was going to be a quick trend that would die out faster than it hit the stores but I think I might be mistaken.

More and more celebrities are working this piece into their ensemble and the fitspo queen Miley Cyrus has no problem rocking her camo jacket.

Everywhere I turn I feel like men and women are sporting this hip new trend.  After asking friends from different parts of the country and traveling the past few months it has been confirmed that the camouflage trend is all the rage in New York, Florida, Washington, and all over Southern California.  So when will the rest of America hop on the camo band wagon and most important will you?

I have taken the liberty of finding some cute camouflage prints for you and your man.  If you like the trend but don't want to make a bold statement while wearing camoflauge, I suggest purchasing a hat or scarf but if you aren't afraid to take it on, buy some cute camo cargo pants or an attention getting top.

Let me know what you think of this trend and if you will be adding it to your summer wardrobe.

Trampolines are NOT just for kids

Hey healthy!
So you know how some people have their arm or leg days at the gym?  Well I love love love Thursdays because Thursdays are my trampoline days!  Sorry kids, but jumping and having fun isn't just for you anymore!  Remember how much fun being on a trampoline or bounce house was as a kid?  Well who says you have to give it up.

I bought a rebounder a few months ago and have been hooked ever since!  Not only has my rebounder given me joy and fun times but its also helped me loose some lbs!! It was a little tricky at first to find my balance and gain my confidence on it but once I got the hang of it I became a jumping machine.  My rebounder work out today was phenomenal.  The reason I enjoy using the rebounder is because it is an internse cardio workout and it isn't hard on my joints like running can be.  I still run but thanks to my mini tramp I don't have to as much.

Below is the rebounder I purchased as well as a few links that helped me get started on my fun little fitness toy!  If you're a beginner I would suggest clicking the beginner link first.  It's only 10 minutes and the instructor has a nice little accent ;) For a complete body work out with instruction, a warm up and cool down, as well as using light weights, try the link by Fayth Caruso.  If you're advanced or up for a challenge I recommend Tracy Anderson's workout.  It's a toughie!

My estimated calories burned for jumping for half an hour on my mini rebounder is 161 calories.  Not too bad for someone having fun.  If you would like to see how many calories you can burn click here for your rebounder calculator

Happy jumping!

Hello Beauties!

I just wanted to formally announce the birthday of one of my favorite places to shop, Sephora!!  The reasons why I love Sephora is that they have a lot of my favorite beauty products under one roof, their employees are always so nice and helpful, and I don't know about you but I get so excited when I hear how many points I have at the end of my purchase!

Well, it's not just our chance to sing and celebrate the birth of the fabulous Sephora.  They decided to celebrate us and are giving back by running a "Sweet 15" campaign where you can get some of their beauty favorites for under $15.  What a steal!  Some of the products coming in at under $15 that yours truly has tried and loves include the following:

  • Soy Face Cleanser by Fresh
  • Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer
  • Philosophy Purity Cleanser
to register your birthday go to http://birthday.sephora.com/

Let me and all the other GGLF readers in on what your Sephora favorites are!!

What's the skinny in San Diego

Ever wonder why the women in San Diego look so great?  Maybe it's just me but every time I'm down there I notice the ladies have nice skin, gorgeous hair, and in shape bodies.  I mean if we all lived next to the beach and had great weather we would look fantastic all the time too! Right?  Well here is something you can do anywhere to get a little more beach ready for summer!

So what's the big secret? Body wraps.  The different types of wraps you can get are for slimming down, getting rid of cellulite, detoxing, and moisturizing your skin.

Body wraps are great for brides before their wedding, post pregnancy to help tighten up skin, before going on your all girls Vegas trip, or to just look good whenever you feel like it!  Lots of women and men swear by these wraps and say there is a noticeable difference with skin elasticity, fading stretch marks, and their dress size. Some wraps that use infrared heat claim to burn anywhere from 1,000-1,500 calories in only 1 hour!

So where can we go to get these body wraps?  There are a few places.  A lot of spas offer different types of body wraps as well as tanning salons or if you're on a budget you can even purchase a kit or make a homemade one.

I have only done a few body wraps in my life and here is what to expect.  If you're going to a spa they will take your measurements before and after so be prepared to strip down in your bra and panties.  After they take your measurements they will cleanse your body and put either a mask or oils on your body depending on which type of wrap you opt for.  Once you are covered with the mask or oils, the professional will wrap you in a cloth or saran wrap nice and tight. This is where you sweat!  All you do is lay there for 30 minutes to an hour but you honestly sweat so much.  When your time is up your rinsed off with cool water and lotion is applied.  Make sure to drink lots of water after to help flush out any toxins and replenish the water you lost from sweating so much.

My experiences with body wraps have been great.  I personally find them extremely relaxing but it can get a little boring after a while just laying there.  The best part of the wrap is that I do like to break a sweat and my skin always feels silky soft instantly!  I always loose inches from my waist after a body wrap but the results only last for a few weeks.

Now nothing is as great as a healthy diet and exercise routine but if you are already doing that and want a boost or just need a quick fix try a body wrap and let me know what you think!

Strawberry fields forever...

Don't you just love fruits and veggies!  They do so many wonderful things for your hair, skin, and nails and they are so yummy!  I grew up eating lots of fruits and vegetables and I think the best way to have them is when they are in season.  That way you know it is fresh and it usually hasn't been sitting around for a long time before you consume them.

Strawberries peak season in California and other warm areas is April-June a.k.a right now!
I am a huge strawberry lover.  I like to eat them plain, put them as a main ingredient in my smoothies when I'm on the go, or add them to cereal, oatmeal, or yogurt.  The possibilities are endless.

Another tasty fruit I love that is in season now are cherries and I have been eating my fair share of them lately.  Cherries are great because they are filled with antioxidants and are known as a healing fruit.  The amazing benefits of cherries include better sleep, the prevention of premature aging, it can help cure a migraine, and if you have parents, aunts, or uncles with arthritis and gout eating cherries can help alleviate some of the pain.

Below is a list of some of my favorite fruits and veggies that are in season.  You can pick these up at your local grocery store or even check out a farmers market.

Happy healthy eating!

  • Apples
  • Apricots
  • Avocados
  • Baby Carrots
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Cherries
  • Corn
  • Cucumbers
  • Garlic
  • Limes
  • Mangos
  • Melons
  • Nectarine
  • Valencia Oranges
  • Peaches
  • Peas
  • Peppers
  • Plums
  • Raspberries
  • Squash
  • Tomatoes

Hey there honey ;)

Honey to me is a super goo!  It is always in my kitchen because it adds flavor to my teas and peanut butter sandwiches.  Honey isn't just tasty though, it is one of my beauty secrets I have been using for years to keep me healthy and looking good.  Below I explain what honey can do for you and let you in on a simple hair and face mask I use once a month!

Honey is an anti-bacterial thanks to enzymes added by those cute little bees.  Because it is an anti-bacterial it  works wonders when you want clear gorgeous looking skin. Honey can help clean out your pores,  exfoliates the skin, and helps look in moisture.

Also wonder why your Mom always made you tea with honey when you were sick?  It is because the anti-bacterial properties of honey help reduce throat irritation and that icky cough!

So next time you have a pimple you need to clear up or a sore throat you want to get rid of turn to honey!

Lemon & Honey Face & Hair Mask

Makes two face and hair masks!
If it is just you, only use half of the ingredients and make yourself a cup of tea while you're waiting for the mask to do its job!

WARNING- It can get pretty sticky so have everything you need ready to go!

What you need:
* 2 tablespoons honey
* The juice from 1 lemon
* A friend to help and share your mask with!
( I have long hair and the friend I usually do this with has short hair. Hey Val!)

Side note: If you both have long, thick hair I would suggest using an extra tablespoon of honey and an extra half a lemon.  Also, from experience I like putting the mixture in my hair first so I don't get any honey or lemon in my eyes.

Directions-
1. Take a lemon, cut it in half, and squeeze all the juice from it.  Then mix in the honey.  Once it is mixed in have your friend help you put most of the mixture in your hair from root to tip.
- The lemon will help remove dandruff and helps with hair growth
- The honey nourishes and moisturizes

2. After you are done with the hair put it up in a clip and get it out of your face.

3. With the remaining of the mixture use your fingers, cotton ball, or a mask brush to put a thin layer on your skin.  Be careful to not get it in your eyes.
-The lemon will help lighten skin and also fight off blackheads
-The honey will cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish skin

I like to leave this mask on anywhere from 5-10 minutes.

Hop in the shower when you're ready to rinse everything off and use the same shampoo and conditioner you normally would.  The end result leaves you with clean feeling skin and silky soft hair that smells delicious!

Try it out and let me know what you think!

Wakey Wakey!

Good morning sunshine! Do you find it hard to get up in the morning? Well, before you hit that snooze button again, try waking up slowly with some stretches. You can start while lying in bed. For your ankles and wrists slowly rotate them both clockwise three times and then counterclockwise. Next, keep your legs straight and point your toes down then flex your foot up. Do this a few times and your ready to get on up and go!Bonus tip: when you get up and find your balance do ten jumping jacks. It's an easy way to get your blood flowing!!

Now get out there and have a wonderful day!!
